The Watchers

Review

A 2024 Top Rated Read

When Mina's car breaks down on the edge of a forest in Ireland, she's left with little choice but to continue on foot through the trees. As darkness falls she hears a woman shouting, telling her to run quickly to a concrete bunker. As the door closes behind her, terrifying noises screech through the forest.

The bunker has a glass wall and a light that switches on at twilight, as the Watchers emerge from their hiding places to observe the people locked inside. Anyone who doesn't reach the bunker before dusk falls prey to the Watchers waiting outside.

Wow! I loved this incredibly spine-chilling tale of monsters lurking in the forest. I literally couldn't put the book down. It really was a scary read. I was continually asking myself: who are the Watchers, why are they here and where did they come from? In some respects I was reminded of Josh Malerman's terrific novel Bird Box. The atmosphere was loaded with fear and creepiness. It was claustrophobic, frightening and unsettling. I thought it was fantastic!

Synopsis

You can't see them. But they can see you.

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams.

Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.
