After the breakdown of his marriage, Ben Hofland and his young son Ollie move back to the Shropshire village where Ben grew up. Ollie initially struggles to settle when he becomes the target of school bullies. But life soon changes for the better — Ben finds freelance work and the bullies lose interest in Ollie. Ben starts to feel luck is on his side.
Detective Imogen Evans is on the trail of a serial killer known as The Viper. His victims are gruesomely posed with smiles on their faces; apparently having died in a state of bliss. Meanwhile, Ben is unaware he's being watched by someone who is going to make him extremely happy. . .
I've read several of the author's books and always feel safe in his hands. He knows how to write cracking psychological thrillers with unexpected twists and turns. His plots are unsettling and lead you down some very dark avenues. Whilst I enjoyed The Lucky Ones, it wasn't a memorable read for me — I didn't connect with it in the way I'd hoped. My mother (who is 84 years young!) read the book before myself and said she thoroughly enjoyed it. Her actual words were "I couldn't put it down". That goes to show how opinions can differ. It's a good story, cleverly plotted and very well-written.

Synopsis
It was the happiest day of her life. Little did she know it was also the last.
When a woman’s body is found in the grounds of a ruined priory, Detective Imogen Evans realises she is dealing with a serial killer―a killer whose victims appear to die in a state of bliss, eyes open, smiles forever frozen on their faces.
A few miles away, single dad Ben Hofland believes his fortunes are changing at last. Forced to move back to the sleepy village where he grew up following the breakdown of his marriage, Ben finally finds work. What’s more, the bullies who have been terrorising his son, Ollie, disappear. For the first time in months, Ben feels lucky.
But he is unaware that someone is watching him and Ollie. Someone who wants nothing but happiness for Ben.
Happiness…and death.
