By Lisa Jewell
When single mum Alice notices a man on the beach outside her home she grows increasingly concerned. He's been there several days; alone, without a coat in the pouring rain, gazing into space. She decides to check on him and learns he's lost his memory. He doesn't know his name, how he came to be on the beach or carry any identification. Against her better judgement Alice offers him a room in her annexe. As time passes she grows fond of the stranger and wants to help him regain his memory and reclaim his life, even if it means losing him for forever.
I love a good Lisa Jewell psychological thriller and this one was fab. The mystery surrounding the man on the beach captured my imagination and I needed to know how his story concluded. Told through a dual timeline of the present and 1993, the plot gathered pace as we discovered how the characters' lives are intertwined. The story was both tragic and uplifting. How can the past and the present be reconciled? A great read!
