The Foster Child

By Jenny Blackhurst

Review

11-year-old Ellie Atkinson lives with her foster family in Gaunt, a small English town. She is the sole survivor of a house fire which destroyed her home; killing her biological family. Bullied at her new school and struggling to fit in, her only friend is foster sister Mary.

After a series of incidents, her teachers and foster parents become fearful; believing Ellie to be dangerous. Child psychologist Imogen Reid is convinced Ellie's just a sad and lonely child; prone to outbursts of anger whilst grieving for her family. But is Imogen wrong? Is she getting too close to Ellie and putting herself in serious danger?

The Foster Child is a fantastic psychological thriller. When events lead me to reach certain conclusions, the author cleverly threw in red herrings which left me questioning everything I thought I knew. I must've changed my mind a hundred times! The unusual paranormal twist captured my imagination and, in my opinion, made the book a page-turner. With some upsetting scenes, it won't be to everyone's tastes, but setting that aside, I thought it was a really good read.
