Body Breaker

By M. W. Craven

Review

A 2024 Top Rated Read

When a severed hand is discovered on a Cumbrian golf course, Detective Inspector Avison Fluke and his team begin an investigation into a grisly murder. However, it's not long before the case is taken out of Fluke's hands by a secret protection unit from London. Back home at his beloved isolated cabin, Fluke is interrupted by an unexpected visitor — a young woman with a cryptic code known to only a few people, including himself. Fluke is plunged straight back into the centre of the investigation.

Body Breaker is the second book in the Avison Fluke duology and yet another excellent novel from the pen of M. W. Craven. With terrific characters who really do feel real, the author is a genius at creating quirky, larger than life, lovable personalities. The plot, although gruesome at times, is fast-paced and intricate with plenty of twists and turns. The glimpse into Fluke's former career in the British Army and his tour of duty in Northern Ireland gives the reader a greater understanding of his friendships and loyalties. The race against time conclusion is fantastic — I was gripping the edge of my seat with sweaty palms! A superb read which I highly recommend.

Synopsis

Investigating how a severed hand ends up on the third green of a Cumbrian golf course is not how Detective Inspector Avison Fluke has planned to spend his Saturday. So when a secret protection unit from London swoops in quoting national security, he's secretly pleased.

But trouble is never far away. A young woman arrives at his lakeside cabin with a cryptic message: a code known to only a handful of people and it forces Fluke back into the investigation he's only just been barred from.

In a case that will change his life forever, Fluke immerses himself in a world of New Age travellers, corrupt cops and domestic extremists. Before long he's alienated his entire team, has been arrested under the Terrorism Act - and has made a pact with the Devil himself. But a voice has called out to him from beyond the grave. And Fluke is only getting started...
