The Breakdown

By B A Paris

Review

Whilst driving home late at night during a fierce storm, Cass Anderson decides to take a short cut through the woods. It's a decision she'll live to regret. With darkness and pouring rain impairing visibility, she spots a car pulled up at the roadside. Has the driver broken down and in need of help? Cass comes to a halt a short distance in front and waits for the driver to exit or flash their lights. But nothing happens. The driver stays where they are. Cass assumes help must already be on the way so she continues her journey home.

The next day Cass hears that a body has been found inside a car in the woods and the police are treating it as murder. Too afraid to own up to being at the scene, Cass keeps quiet. Then the silent phone calls and disturbing incidents begin. She's terrified the killer knows her identity and is coming for her.

This book is a twisty psychological thriller. You're never quite sure what direction it's going to take or who is working behind the scenes to facilitate Cass' downfall. It makes you feel unsettled and anxious. As the strange incidents increase, the tension intensifies. The story moves at a good pace and the main characters are fully developed. The domestic setting worked very well — if you can't feel safe in your own home is anywhere safe at all?

Synopsis

If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust?

It all started that night in the woods.

Cass Anderson didn’t stop to help the woman in the car, and now she’s dead.

Consumed by guilt, she’s also starting to forget things. Whether she took her pills, what her house alarm code is – and if the knife in the kitchen really had blood on it.
